A Characterization of Deterministic Sampling Patterns for Low-Rank Matrix Completion

چکیده
Low-rank matrix completion (LRMC) problems arise in a wide variety of applications. Previous theory mainly provides conditions for completion under missing-at-random samplings. This paper studies deterministic conditions for completion. An incomplete d ×N matrix is finitely rank-r completable if there are at most finitely many rank-r matrices that agree with all its observed entries. Finite completability is the tipping point in LRMC, as a few additional samples of a finitely completable matrix guarantee its unique completability. The main contribution of this paper is a deterministic sampling condition for finite completablility. We use this to also derive deterministic sampling conditions for unique completability that can be efficiently verified. We also show that under uniform random sampling schemes, these conditions are satisfied with high probability if O(max{r, log d}) entries per column are observed. These findings have several implications on LRMC regarding lower bounds, sample and computational complexity, the role of coherence, adaptive settings and the validation of any completion algorithm. We complement our theoretical results with experiments that support our findings and motivate future analysis of uncharted sampling regimes.

A Characterization of Sampling Patterns for Union of Low-Rank Subspaces Retrieval Problem
In this paper, we characterize the deterministic conditions on the locations of the sampled entries, i.e., sampling pattern, that are equivalent to finite completability of a matrix that represents the union of several lowrank subspaces. To this end, in contrast with the existing analysis on Grassmannian manifold for conventional matrix completion problem, we propose a geometric analysis on the...

In this paper, we analyze the fundamental conditions for low-rank tensor completion given the separation or tensor-train (TT) rank, i.e., ranks of unfoldings. We exploit the algebraic structure of the TT decomposition to obtain the deterministic necessary and sufficient conditions on the locations of the samples to ensure finite completability. Specifically, we propose an algebraic geometric an...
متن کاملFundamental Conditions for Low-CP-Rank Tensor Completion
We consider the problem of low canonical polyadic (CP) rank tensor completion. A completion is a tensor whose entries agree with the observed entries and its rank matches the given CP rank. We analyze the manifold structure corresponding to the tensors with the given rank and define a set of polynomials based on the sampling pattern and CP decomposition. Then, we show that finite completability...

We investigate the fundamental conditions on the sampling pattern, i.e., locations of the sampled entries, for finite completability of a low-rank tensor given some components of its Tucker rank. In order to find the deterministic necessary and sufficient conditions, we propose an algebraic geometric analysis on the Tucker manifold, which allows us to incorporate multiple rank components in the...
متن کاملRank Determination for Low-Rank Data Completion
Recently, fundamental conditions on the sampling patterns have been obtained for finite completability of low-rank matrices or tensors given the corresponding ranks. In this paper, we consider the scenario where the rank is not given and we aim to approximate the unknown rank based on the location of sampled entries and some given completion. We consider a number of data models, including singl...
